Anthropic Projects First Profit in Q2 2026, OpenAI Faces $14B Loss
AI company Anthropic anticipates its first operating profit of $559 million in Q2 2026, driven by strong performance in the enterprise coding market. Meanwhile, OpenAI projects a significant $14 billion net loss for the full year 2026.

Anthropic projects its first profit; OpenAI a $14B loss
Last updated: 26 June 2026
Anthropic has told investors it expects its first operating profit — about $559 million — in the second quarter of 2026, on projected revenue of $10.9 billion. Over the same year, OpenAI's own internal forecast projects a net loss of roughly $14 billion. Both numbers are projections shared privately, not audited results, and they measure different things.
Disclosure: this story concerns Anthropic, maker of Claude; this newsroom uses Claude in production. The coding-market data below is from Menlo Ventures, which is an investor in Anthropic. Every figure here is a forecast or estimate, not an audited filing — both companies are still private.
TL;DR
- Anthropic projects ~$559M operating income in Q2 2026 — its first profitable quarter — on ~$10.9B revenue, up from $4.8B in Q1.
- It warns the profit may not last the year, as infrastructure spending rises.
- Anthropic's self-disclosed run-rate is ~$47B (annualized, and reported gross) — up from ~$9B at the end of 2025.
- OpenAI's internal documents project a ~$14B net loss for full-year 2026 — a different measure over a different window.
- The gap is attributed to coding: Claude leads the enterprise coding segment at ~54% share (Menlo), the largest enterprise AI use case.
The profit projection
According to financial projections reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Anthropic told investors it expects roughly $559 million in operating income for the June quarter projection, on projected revenue of about $10.9 billion — up roughly 130% from $4.8 billion in the first quarter. The company also told investors its compute cost fell from 71 cents per dollar of revenue in Q1 to a projected 56 cents in Q2.
The projection is notable because it is early: guidance Anthropic gave investors last summer did not expect a full-year profit before 2028. The company cautioned it may not sustain profitability across all of 2026, citing planned increases in data-center spending. CEO Dario Amodei has described the pace bluntly, saying revenue growth had become "too hard to handle."
A note on the $47 billion
Anthropic's headline number — a run-rate of about $47 billion claim, disclosed in its May Series H announcement — needs two caveats readers should hold onto. First, "run-rate" is an annualized projection: a recent month's revenue multiplied by twelve, not money already booked over a year. Second, Anthropic reports revenue from cloud resellers (AWS, Google, Microsoft) on a gross basis, counting total end-customer spend as revenue, which inflates the top line relative to peers that report net. The trajectory is still steep by any measure — the company has walked the figure from roughly $9 billion at the end of 2025 to $14 billion in February, $30 billion in April, and $47 billion in May — but the number is a self-reported annualized projection, not an audited annual total.
What's driving it: coding
The growth engine is Claude Code, Anthropic's agentic coding tool. By Menlo Ventures' estimate, Anthropic holds about 54% of the enterprise coding market claim — up from 42% six months earlier — against roughly 21% for OpenAI. That matters because coding is, by Menlo's count, about 51% of all enterprise generative-AI usage: the single largest use case, not a niche. (Menlo's report separately puts Anthropic's share of total enterprise LLM spend near 40%, a broader figure that is sometimes confused with the coding number.)
A caveat on the source: Menlo Ventures is an investor in Anthropic, and its figures are survey-based estimates, not audited market data. They point clearly in one direction, but they are an interested party's estimate.
The OpenAI contrast isn't apples-to-apples
OpenAI's projected ~$14 billion loss projection, from internal documents reported by The Information, is real and large — nearly triple its 2025 loss. But set it beside Anthropic's figure carefully: $14 billion is a full-year net loss, while Anthropic's $559 million is a single-quarter operating profit. Different metric, different window. The cleaner comparison is structural: reporting on the same WSJ documents indicates OpenAI runs at a far higher burn relative to revenue, carries a heavier free-consumer subsidy through ChatGPT, and has committed to more aggressive data-center spending. Anthropic's enterprise-weighted mix and reliance on Google and Amazon chips over Nvidia are credited with containing its costs.
The skeptic's case
Not everyone reads the profit as a turning point. Critic Ed Zitron argues the Q2 result is timing, not transformation: Anthropic's deal to take over SpaceX's Colossus compute — for which it pays SpaceX about $1.25 billion a month through May 2029, per SpaceX's IPO prospectus — carries a discounted ramp in its early months, exactly the May–June window that produces the profitable quarter. In his reading, the profit is "a result of accountancy rather than any improvements to its business model." That is a pointed, contested view from a vocal skeptic — but it lines up with Anthropic's own caution that the profit may not hold, and with the gross-reporting caveat above. The honest read: the milestone is real on the company's projections, and its durability is unproven.
All figures here are private-company projections or third-party estimates, not audited filings. Run-rate is annualized, not booked revenue; Anthropic reports cloud-reseller revenue gross. Items labeled projection are forecasts; claim figures are self-disclosed or estimated and unaudited. Verify against company filings once available.
